·      Please join us in S202 tomorrow during Genius Hour to have a conversation with Ms. Sarah Lim, Nuclear Engineer with Y-12 Security Complex in Oak Ridge. Ms. Lim will talk about her college experience (recently graduated), her career, and the excitement of engineering. Please remember to put all trash in the appropriate place at the end of the discussion.

·      Make plans tonight, Friday, or Saturday to go to Thompson-Boling Arena, 8:30am-6:30pm and cheer on the STEMpunks and see what all the fun is about, or you can watch them compete on the livestream on The Blue Alliance!  https://www.thebluealliance.com/

·      Any student who took the PSAT this year and received your score reports in January can come to Guidance to pick up your test booklet ASAP.

·      Congratulations to Erykah Carter, who was voted to represent the L&N at the systemwide “CTE Goes Live” competition on May 6 at Market Square!

·      Students in grades 10-12 go here for a survey that will let you sign up to take either a practice ACT or AP exam this Saturday, April 2, from 8:30 – 12:00.  This is free.  The test will be administered under regular testing conditions, will be scored (so you’ll get feedback on how you did) and we’ll be feeding all test takers pizza before dismissing on Saturday.  All are encouraged to take advantage of this great opportunity to sharpen your skills just prior to taking the “real” thing.

·      Make plans now to attend the 3rd annual Seniors v Faculty flag football game, Monday, April 4 on the Festival Lawn at Worlds Fair Park (closest to the school) from 3:30 – 4:30.  Free admission but there will be candy, drinks, etc. for sale to enjoy while watching the game.  Come join us!

·      Congratulations to Cameron Johnson who was just accepted into the Governor’s School of the Arts for this summer!

·      A reminder to students – the Veterans Memorial and its grounds are not part of our campus.  It is a place of remembrance and to honor the ultimate sacrifices of real American heroes.  It is not a place to play or have your lunch, and definitely not a place to leave your garbage!  Police yourselves and each other.  Do not disrespect the Memorial.

·      Autumn is the best time to go to NYC! Our trip will take place during Fall Break, from Saturday morning, October 8 - Thursday morning, October 13, 2016. We will see: the Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue, Grand Central Station, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, 9/11 Memorial, Greenwich Village, Soho, Chinatown, Little Italy, the Museum of Modern Art, Central Park & the Zoo, Times Square, High Line, the American Museum of Natural History/Hayden Planetarium, a Broadway and an off-Broadway Show. The price includes bus transportation to and from NYC, lodging, all attractions, all meals in NYC and our tour bus. (Only meals on the bus trip itself are not included.) Chaperones will be Mr. Bell, Mr. Childers, Mr. Crattie, Ms. Ellis, Ms. Morrell and Ms. Jorgenson.  Attached are the trip presentation, which includes the itinerary, prices and the registration form which includes information about the optional cancellation insurance policy, as well as all of the "fine print". (HOWEVER, please register online, so no registration form is needed. It is included here so that you have access to all of the "fine print". The deposit will be paid directly to Gerber, and not to the L&N.)

·      Last chance: Come join us at the National Science & Engineering Festival Trip to DC!  REMINDER: Your $300 balance is OVERDUE if you are going (and have already paid your deposit) to the National Science & Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C. April 13-17. Please bring your payment to Ms. Jorgensen or Ms. Ellis this week. If for any reason, you cannot come, please let us know right away so we can find a replacement. You will only have your deposit refunded if we can fill your spot.  ALSO, we have one slot each for a male and a female student on the DC Field Trip. First come, first served. E-mail cheri.jorgenson@knoxschools.org if you decide to go. Bring your $400 (total cost) and filled out field trip permission form (attached). Community  & Guidance Ops:
·      Knox County Youth Health Board is seeking applicants.  The Youth Health Board is a diverse group of young people from across Knox County.  Two reps from each high school will be accepted.  Students who are selected will be able to explore the field of Public Health and expand their knowledge by working with numerous health professionals.  Members will work with their community to address issues that they are passionate about.  Deadline to apply is April 1, 2016.  See front office for more info and applications.

·      Congratulations to Erykah Carter, who was voted to represent the L&N at the systemwide “CTE Goes Live” competition on May 6 at Market Square!

·      Congratulations to our FIRST Robotics Team 3966, L&N STEMpunks, who competed at the Rocket City Regional in Huntsville, Alabama this past week! They brought home the Entrepreneurship Award, which celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit by recognizing a team that has developed the framework for a comprehensive business plan to scope, manage, and achieve team objectives. They compete again this week at the Smoky Mountains Regional against 60 other teams. The competition is free to the public and will be at Thompson-Boling Arena Thursday through Saturday, 8:30am-6:30pm. ·      Congratulations to Chloe Taylor, Kishan Tailor, Jada Bennett and Adrian Calderon who have been selected to participate on a State Advisory Council for the Tennessee Department of Education.   As members of the Council, they will share their experiences and perspectives on education in discussions about present and future plans by the Department.  Each high school in the State was allowed to nominate a team, the L&N Team was selected from our region.  Another L&N First!!! Team faculty representative will be Mr. Joe Foy.

Welcome to our Spring Parent Conferences!

You are invited to use the room list below to find the teachers you need to see.  In order for you and others to see as many as possible, if your conversation needs to last longer than 10 minutes you should be prepared to schedule a follow up appointment with the teacher.  Parents are encouraged to use the forms to request more time so everyone can see as many teaches as possible tonight.  Please see the “tips” on the back of this sheet for general guidelines for an effective conference.

Parents may also drop into the Media Center at 6:30 p.m. for more information about a planned fall break, 2016, trip to New York City for students and at 7:00 p.m. for information about an upcoming trip to Washington DC for the USA Science and Engineering Festival and national galleries art tour.
