9-15-17 Student Mission Briefing

GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Friday, September 15, 2017 – N-day
School Mission – Boundless STEM: Learning & Leading
L&N Student Mission – #Own it!

School Ops:
·      There is an event of scientific significance occurring this morning:  Cassini spacecraft ends its mult-year mission to Saturn and its moons tomorrow morning.  At about 8:00 AM, it will enter the atmosphere, sending back as much information as it can before it burns up.  Because of distance, it will take the signals over 80 minutes (at 3.00 x 10^8 meters/second) to reach Earth.  Loss of communication is likely to be before burn-up.  Its antenna must be pointed directly at Earth, it will start shaking soon after entering atmosphere, perturbing the transmission path to Earth.  Find out more at https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/cassini-spacecraft-makes-its-final-approach-to-saturn

·      We expect all 9, 10 and 11th graders to take the PSAT in October at our school testing date (October 25).  This will give you feedback as you prepare for the ACT and also get you into the pipeline for National Merit Scholarship opportunities.  If you have not already registered, go to the School Counseling page of the website under "Test Info and Test Prep".  There is one form for 9th graders, and one form for 10th/11th graders.  Turn completed forms in to Mrs. Johnson in Guidance by next Wednesday, 9/20.   If you did not pay the ACT prep fee already ($20) you can turn it in with your registration.  We can look it up to see if you’ve paid yet.  Even if you cannot pay you need to register to take this test.  It is expected of ALL 9 -11th graders!

·      Spring 2018 Washington DC Field Trip: Registration has begun for the bi-annual Washington DC field trip to the USA Science and Engineering Festival. Trip includes the festival, national monuments tour, museum visits including Smithsonian, National Mall and more. $400 cost covers transportation, hotel (four persons per room), admissions, misc. fees, and hot breakfast. Students will be responsible for lunch and dinner costs. $100 deposit due October 20th. Registration forms available in the office. You may contact Ms. Jorgenson or Mr. Powell for more information- cheri.jorgenson@knoxschools.org or timothy.powell@knoxschools.org

In case you were wondering, every purchase you make at the Coffee Nook helps improve our Library. Really, it does! We're using the money we raised last year to purchase a subscription for ebooks both school-related and for pleasure reading. Yay! We should have them up and available by October.

·      What does it cost? Nothing. It's free!
