 “N” Day Early Release Schedule

·      Every year Google hosts a Doodle for Google competition.  The grand prize winner gets to have their Doodle displayed on the Google page! For more info, go to: http://www.google.com/doodle4google/start.html

Deadline for submitting your doodle is March 20.

·      Congrats to our Swimmers and divers who competed at State swim meet this weekend. The STEM Academy finished 15th out of 130 teams!

Emily Bretscher and Jacob Siler got second in the diving followed by Paul Bretscher, Cole Patrick, and John-Alex Evans in 3rd, 10th, and 16th respectively. James Bretscher finished 3rd in the butterfly and 4th in the backstroke. Owen Sanders finished 9th in the butterfly and 16th in the breaststroke.  Alli Lapps finished 5th in the backstroke.  Congratulate Abby Barker, Alli Lapps, Taylor Martin, Emily Chase, Jessica Foster, Molly Duncan, James Bretscher, Jonathan Lara, Owen Sanders, Preston Nicely, Emily Bretscher, Jacob Siler, John Alex Evans, Cole Patrick, and Paul Bretscher for making the state cuts and competing in Nashville. ·      Starting Wednesday, Feb. 19th, there will be student-led Latin tutoring available in Room 104 during Early Release time. This is a great time to get your questions answered, learn studying techniques from experienced students who have taken the classes you're in, and review material to help you gain a more thorough understanding of the content.  If you plan to attend, please report within the first 15 minutes of early release as tutors will not stay if no one shows up.

·      There will be a meeting today, Wednesday, at 3:30 for all students interested in tennis tryouts. Meeting will be in Room D 112, the PE room. If you have a conflict with Thursday’s tryout date you can tell me (Coach Orrick) personally at that specific time. ALL students trying out for tennis need to attend the meeting tomorrow! Tennis Tryouts will be held Thursday, 2-20-14, at Tyson Tennis Complex at 4:45 p.m.  Don’t forget you need a physical to participate in the tryout if you have not had one.  Weather wise it will be the best day of the year so far! If you get a chance on Tuesday or Wednesday after school go to Tyson with a partner and hit around for a while before tryouts on Thursday.

·      We are planning a trip to the USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington DC, April 24 – 26.  Anyone interested in attending needs to plan on coming to an informational meeting Thursday, Feb 20, at 9:00 in room 104.  Email Mrs. Ashe if you’re interested but can’t make the meeting.  Open to all students – in conjunction with Art Honor Society.

·      MAGIC Tournament: Be crowned STEM champion!  The Tournament has been rescheduled to Saturday, 3/1, from 2-6pm in the Commons.  Entry fee is $15. Prize support will be given to the top 8 and bonus prizes will be given.  Additionally, there will be guest players bounty on their heads - do you have what it takes to beat them?  Pre-registration during all 3 lunches until 2/21. Entry can be purchased at the door.  Proceeds go to support PROM!

·    Last 2 days to bring in peanut butter for the PTSA drive!  Bring to the office.

·    Join us for book club!  Our next meeting is on Wednesday, February 19th, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Media Center. Because it will have been a couple months since we last met, we selected several books to read to keep us busy.  Feel free to read one or more of the following and join us on February 19:  Life as We Knew It by Susan Pfeffer, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, Evermore by Alyson Noel, and The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. Everyone is welcome!

·      Big Orange STEM Symposium:  High school students are invited to the University of Tennessee's Big Orange STEM Symposium on Saturday, March 29 from 10:00am-3:00pm at Hodges Library.  This program will introduce local high school students to careers and research exploration in STEM disciplines through active engagement, networking, and hands-on presentations from experts in the field and community.  Registration is free at http://s.lib.utk.edu/19s and includes a FREE LUNCH.  Please also email Ms. Ellis if you're attending.

From the guidance office: 

·      The Advanced Placement Exam Registration forms are now located on the school counseling webpage under the forms section.   All registration forms and payment are due to Mrs. Johnson by March 15^th, 2014.  

·      Juniors will be taking the in-school ACT on Tuesday, March 4th at 8:00 am.  Students are responsible for their own transportation to school that morning.  If a junior does not want to take the test this date, please let Mrs. Salerno know asap.  

·      Juniors/Seniors don’t miss out.  Keep checking the Guidance page on our website.  They update scholarship opportunities on a regular basis and there are a whole bunch with Feburary deadlines.  Don’t miss out!

Clubs and Organizational happenings:

  

·      Chess club meets Wednesday mornings from 8:30 – 9:15 in room 202.

·      Equality club meets Tuesday mornings 8:50 – 9:15 in room 104.

·    Yarn Arts group meets Wednesdays from 4:30 – 5:30 in the Commons Area.  All students and faculty are invited to attend – if you don’t know how to knit or crochet, come and learn!  Bring a project or just some yarn and a crochet hook!

·    Teens for Christ, Monday mornings in room D112
