8-18-17 Student Mission Briefing

GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Thursday, August 17, 2017 – L-day
School Mission – Boundless STEM: Learning & Leading
L&N Student Mission – #Own it!

School Ops:
·      Yearbooks for the 2017-18 school year are officially on sale! Pick up an order form from the office any time or order yours from www.jostensyearbooks.com. The price per book is $55 now through September 15th. The longer you wait to order yours, the higher the price goes up, so make sure to order yours as soon as possible to save up to $25 this school year!

·      You’ve got your glasses, now the Yearbook staff wants your photos of your eclipse experience for this year’s edition.  Take precautions, don’t try to take pictures of the sun without a special filter, but you could take pictures of your camera obscura shadows (you’ll make them in Advisory today) or other images at the moment of totality.  We’ll be sharing a link where you can upload next week.  Plan now!

·      Don't forget! The L&N STEMpunks robotics team interest meeting is this Friday August 18th 5-7 in the commons! Come join us to find out more about the team (bring your parents) and officially sign up. Robotics members will be wearing team shirts today and Friday, so feel free to ask them what our team is all about.

·      Juniors with last names Lee through Witt will meet in the STEM Space during 1st and 2nd lunch today for your class meeting.  Attendance will be taken, look for your advisor and have a seat.  You’ll have 3rd lunch today.

·      Students, did you know we have a social worker here on Tuesday and Thursdays from 8:30 – 2:30?  She can help you with community resources, shoe and clothing cards, hygiene items, and is just nice to talk to!   Don’t try to handle family problems on your own – reach out for the help that is here.  You can contact her through the front office, or email her directly at Kimberly.stooksbury@knoxschools.org

·      Are you quick on the draw? Do you like jeopardy? Then you might be interested in joining the L&N Science Bowl Team! If so, please complete the following Google form to receive additional information: https://goo.gl/forms/uKHA268S4mLVIccH3.

Community  & Guidance Ops:
·      Be sure you are checking your schedule on Aspen before each class – your schedule can change even during the day!  We are finishing changes by balancing class sizes.  Stay informed!

Quote of the day from Fred Espenak (Mr. Eclipse):

There’s no way to oversell how spectacular and incredible seeing a total eclipse is.  A lot of people think they’ve seen an eclipse.  They think they’ve seen a partial solar eclipse – even if they’ve seen a 99% partial, it pales in comparison to see a complete, 100% total eclipse of the sun.

Stay safe, Gryphons!  Use good sense, use your glasses – and enjoy this experience.  You might want to write down your thoughts over the weekend.  Keep them.  One day you’ll be able to tell young people that you remember the Great American Eclipse of 2017!
