GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Thursday, May 10, 2018 – L-day
SENIOR L-day CLASS FINALS
School Mission – Boundless STEM: Learning & Leading
L&N Student Mission – #Own it!

Special Ops:
Special recognition to all students and staff members –
·      This week L&N was named by the TN Dept of Ed as Knox County’s only STEM Designated school.  We are one of only 3 high schools across the whole state.  This was following a lengthy application process that included an evaluation team’s visit to the school.
·      US News & World Report, the publication which ranks high schools, colleges, and universities across the country, has awarded the L&N a Silver Medal for accomplishment for 2018.  They rank us as the #6 best high school in the state of TN (6th of 363), #118 out of all magnet schools in the country (118th of 937), and #821 best high school in the whole country (#821 of 5928).
         WELL DONE GRYPHONS!!

School Ops:
·      Start making plans now all students – next Thursday, May 17, is graduation for the Class of 2018 at 3:00 at Thompson Boling Arena.  We will dismiss school for all students at 1:00 – lunch will be served to everyone until 1:30.  You will meet all 4 L-day classes in shortened periods before 1:00.  Students who have transportation or a way home may leave (just like an Early Release day).  Students who ride buses will wait, supervised, in the Commons/Verandah until 4:30.

·      A series of disastrous blind dates! Teens who express their angst by sharing selfies! A man obsessed with small, fluffy animals!   Come out and enjoy a night of theatre on May 15th from 7-9pm in the Commons! The Advanced Theatre class will perform three one-act plays: Check Please, Selfie, and Of Mice and Men. Refreshments will be for sale and a donation of $5 is appreciated.

·      Well, it has taken 2 years from the inaugural Water Bottle Rocket project (Scientific Research) and the original record set by Team Horrocks, but alas we have a new record...  Congrats to A. McGhee and E. McFarland for breaking the hang time record with a time of 12.9 seconds!  This is quite an engineering achievement- Well done!

·      Students – today is the last day to go online and vote for your freshman classmate, Evan Carr.  He’s been nominated for this week’s Prep Xtra Player of the Week for his great tennis performance!  Go here to vote.  You can vote more than once!

·      Huge congrats to Haley Folsom, who graduated with her Associate’s Degree from Pellissippi State Community College last Friday – 2 weeks before she’ll earn her high school diploma from L&N!  For more information, click here for an article from PSCC about it.  Way to go Haley!

·      Congratulations to the STEM Ultimate Frisbee team!  They won the TN State Championship for the 2nd year in a row over the weekend!  Well done team!

·      Students – as we enter the last 2 full weeks of school you should have a good idea where your grades will wind up for the year.  There will be a meeting on Monday, May 14, at 5:30 p.m. in the Commons for all information and registration for summer school courses.  Summer school will run as in years past at the L&N where all students start out working daily on campus and once you’ve made adequate process you can complete the course from home.  Summer school runs from May 29 – June 29 and costs $10 per course.  You may take 2 courses per summer.  Other questions? Come to the meeting on the 14th!

Community  & Guidance Ops:
·      Big shout out to Chloe Weaver and Caleb Weaver for being accepted to a 5-week summer program at the Berklee School of Music in Boston for this summer!  Bravo!

·      Congratulations to Eddie Ceasu, who signed yesterday to swim for the University of the Cumberlands!  Good luck!

Quote of the day from Carl Bard:
