12-13-16 Student Mission Briefing

GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Tuesday, December 13, 2016 – “L” day
L&N Student Mission – #Own it!

School Ops:
·      Did you remember to have parents sign your mid-term exam dismissal slip?  Bring it to any teacher this week or you won’t be able to leave on half days next week! Mid-terms start this Thursday, for L3 & L4 – be ready – one last strong effort and then you can take a break!

·      Happy holidays from SGA! Next week, SGA will be delivering candy grams and holiday cards to your Friday advisory! For $1 you can send a candy cane to one of your friends, and for $2 you can send a holiday card! Send both for just $2.50! You can also get a $5 ticket to the Friday Holiday Advisory where we will be providing snacks, drinks, and playing The Polar Express! Come to the commons during lunch to get in on these hot holiday offers!"

·      It’s here!  Winter Wonder week!  Sponsored by your SGA – plan to participate and blow off steam while you give that last week’s push to the end of the semester!

·      Plan now to attend our Musical Gryphons Winter Concert tonight, December 13, at 7:00 p.m. at the Knoxville Convention Center.  Admission is free.  Come and bring your friends!
·      Hey students! We hear Santa is working on his Nice and Naughty list!  Want to be sure your teacher ends up on his list and has to serve time in Santa’s “naughty cell” in the Commons area on Tuesday, Dec 13?   It’ll cost you – and all the proceeds will go to help our SECME group go on a college tour this spring!  Before school on Friday, Monday, or Tuesday, come to the Commons red brick “jail” area and fill out a naughty list nomination from the “most wanted teachers” posters you’ll see for whom you wish to see in the Cell in the Commons on 12/13.  Reach out to your friends to raise more money and increase the sentence!
      Here’s how it works:
o   To put your teacher in the Naughty Cell in the Commons will cost $1 per minute, up to the length of your class period (up to 80 minutes).
o   For “sentences” of 30 minutes or less, a sub will come to your class while your teacher serves his/her time.  For “sentences” of 31 – 80 minutes, the class will report to the Commons while the teacher serves his/her sentence.
o   Due to space, we have to limit to no more than 3 teachers able to “serve sentence” at any one time.
o   All funds must be contributed by the start of school on Tuesday so the sentence can be verified by administration, who reserve the right to return funds if the sentence cannot be carried out for any reason.
o   You also have the chance to nominate your teacher for the “nice list!”  Get on their good side by contributing $1 for every 2 minutes to get out of their sentence!  Teachers will be notified how much was raised to put them in the cell and how much was raised to get them out!

·      Hey everybody! Prom committee will be selling single prom tickets in the commons for $40 now through December 21st. This is the lowest price of the year!  Don’t wait, after Winter Break the prices go up!

Community  & Guidance Ops:
·      PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 8/9 online score reports are now available to students.  Visit psat.org/scorereport to see yours today!  Videos, presentations, and other resources have been posted on the School Counseling page of STEM's website under the "Test Prep and Test Info" tab on the left side of the screen.  Resources for the PSAT/NMSQT can also be accessed directly by visiting: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10.  Resources for the PSAT 8/9 can be accessed here: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-8-9/scores.  Paper copies of scores will be distributed to students during lunch as the school receives them.  Please feel free to contact sarah.salerno@knoxschools.org if you have further questions after exploring these resources.

·      ACT invites students to join them for a free online event to help prepare for the ACT– a live session covering all four subject areas on the ACT test.  ACT expert instructors will outline the most commonly tested concepts on the ACT and provide an overview of the powerful interactive instruction available through ACT®Kaplan® Online Prep Live.  Students may bookmark this page: http://onlinepreplive.com/ and plan on joining ACT on the above date. If they can’t make the live event, check back later for a free on-demand recording of the presentation.

Quotes of the day in honor of our Music Showcase Concert tonight:

From Leonard Bernstein:
This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.

From Bono (lead singer for U2):
Music can change the world because it can change people.
