11-8-17 Student Mission Briefing

School Ops:
·      Student drivers – Blackstock lot will be closed Nov 8 (Wednesday) this week for parking.  Please plan ahead and make other arrangements for parking tomorrow!

·      Today – we are helping Knox County Schools break a world record this morning by having the most number of students coding at one time.  In order to complete this, we have people from the Guinness Book of World Records in the building and will be extending 2nd period to accommodate a press conference in our Media Center.  The day’s schedule is:
o   N1 – 9:30 – 10:52 (usual schedule)
o   N2 – 10:57 – 12:30* (extending by 11 minutes)
o   Lunches 12:30 – 1:41 (1st lunch will be extended by 10 minutes to overlap with 2nd lunch.  All others will be on usual schedule)
o   N3/N4 – as usual

·      Are you interested in math? Mu Alpha Theta is hosting Round 1 of the annual Log1 competition this Thursday at 8:45 AM in Room 214 or during Second Lunch of Genius Hour in Room 221. The competition is a 15-question free-response test with no calculator, and it should take about half an hour. The two categories are "Functions" and "Counting and Probability." The three divisions are Mu, for Calculus students, Alpha, for students who have passed Algebra 2 but aren't in Calculus yet, and Theta, for students who haven't completed Algebra 2 yet. If you have any questions, feel free to E-mail s731551@student.knoxschools.org.

·      Swim/Dive Team Results from Sunday:  How ‘bout them Gryphons! STEM 216 – West 148 – Central 63, that’s 2 victorious meets in a row!!

·      Freshmen – you received an email from yearbook sponsor Christina.daugherty@knoxschools.org asking for volunteers to be interviewed for this year’s edition of our yearbook.  Please email her if you’re willing to be in the book!

·      Big congrats to our Running Gryphons!  Both boys and girls teams had a great showing at State Championships over the weekend – Seth Jinks won the Small School Division race for the boys, and as a team they were the state Runner-Up (2nd place!), also earning Coach Christina Daugherty the TSSAA Coaches’ Plaque.  On the girls side Brooke Foster placed 5th and Deja Adams placed 15th.  Way to go Gryphons!

·      Also shout out to our robotics team, the L&N STEMpunks finished 2nd at the Battle for the Bluegrass robotics matchup in Kentucky.  What a great pre-season warm up – get used to winning team!!

·      All students who wish to enter our L&N National History Day competition are invited to do so.  It is not necessary to do this as part of a class project.  You may compete just for the love of history and the love of competition!  As always, follow exact directions on NHD website, and bring Process Paper, Annotated Bibliography, and your project to the competition in the Commons--9:30, Monday, Nov 20.  Please email Mrs. Robbins or Ms. Stanish if you plan to compete (other than as part of a class) so we can plan exhibit space for you.  Remember, you may compete as an individual or a group (maximum five people).  Questions?  Email Mrs. Robbins or Ms. Stanish.

·      Congrats to Lucy Drinnen, Cinna Lockhart, and Reed Freeman, who’s video “Thank a Veteran” just won the ORNL Veteran’s Day Video contest.  This is the 4th year in a row that an L&N team has won this competition!  Here’s a link to their winning video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v-8BivR6uA

·      And speaking of Veteran’s Day – you’ll be hearing more in Advisory class on Friday about our school field trip along Gay St next week, on Nov 10, to watch the Veteran’s Day Parade live!  This is a great tradition that is unique to our school – looking forward to all students participating!

Community  & Guidance Ops:
·      The Tennessee Governor's School program offers an intensive learning experience for gifted and talented students during the month of June.  Eleven different subject areas are covered at university campuses around the state.
