GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Friday, October 23, 2015 – “N” classes
2015-16 L&N Student Mission – Own it!

School Ops:
·      There will be one lane closed next to Worlds Fair Park today at dismissal as they set up for the Komen Race this weekend.  Please arrange for whomever picks you up in the afternoon to do it at an alternate location!

·      SGA is providing a free doughnut for all students with all A’s and B’s on the last progress report.  You must be in your assigned Advisory class to receive your doughnut today.  No Exceptions. Thank you and congratulations!

·      All students: Remember to purchase chain links at lunch to help your class earn points for Spirit Week. All proceeds stay in your class account and contribute towards your class gift to the school when you're a senior.

·      Help SGA collect donations for Coats for the Cold! Bring in gently used coats, blankets, gloves, hats, scarves, or donations to the collection bin in the front office from now until October 29th.

·      Interested in writing a novel? Maybe you've already started one? November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). Check out the website for the Young Writers Program and sign up here: http://ywp.nanowrimo.org/.  To celebrate and encourage participation, the Media Center will be open at 8 a.m. in the morning throughout November. Just think about what you could accomplish in just 1 hour a day for a month! Work alongside Mr. Crattie and Ms. Ellis as they work on their own novels.

·      Need some homework help? Remember that www.Tutor.com offers you free online tutoring from 3 to 11 p.m. All you need is a library card to access it! (Thank you Knox County Public Library!) If you don't have a library card, stop by the Media Center to pick up an application to get one. They're free too!

·      Students – our whole school walking field trip to view the annual Veterans’ Day Parade down Gay St in downtown is just 3 weeks away.  We MUST have an extended campus form turned in for you in order for you to go.  Anyone who has not returned this form will stay in the Commons Area while the rest of us go, from 10:00 – 12:30 on Nov 11.  If you need another copy or are not sure you turned one in, check with Mr. Galyon or Powell in the front office.  Don’t miss out!

·      For all students intending on participating in Track and Field this year
This is for those who are planning on being on track this Spring
If you are planning on being on the track team, your season has started! Here's Why:
1.  Track Fees are $150. The total cost will be due later in the year, but YOU must pay $50.00 by November 6 to reserve your uniform and sweats.
2. Your physical is due by December 2.
3. You must contact s759858@student.knoxschools.org, to get on the official track roster by November 5 if you are planning on competing this Spring. (With uniform size.)
4. Sign up with Matt about parking for the 11/14 home game.
5. If you have any questions: contact Coach Pickle (mac.pickle@knoxschools.org )

·      Family Fun Fitness!  Join us for a guided urban bike ride this Saturday, Oct. 24 from 10:00 – 11:30.  Open to everyone (your whole family), bring your bike, helmet, water bottle and family or friends!  Meet at Bearden Bike and Trail to start.  See Mr. Parker for more information.

·      SPIRIT WEEK IS HERE!  Remember, each class earns points daily by the percentage of students participating in each activity!  Right now, Seniors are winning, with Sophomores right on their heels in 2nd place!  The daily themes/activities are:
o   Fri, 10/23 – Dynamic Duo
o   Sat, 10/24 – Fall Dance, 7:00 – 10:00 in the Commons

·      Quick, what's the name given to a compartmentalized structure formed by a phospholipid membrane, or to an electrolytic solution containing electrodes with different potentials? If you answered "cell," you might have what it takes to be a member of the L&N Science Bowl team! What's involved? Participants will meet for weekly practices, and a team of 5 will compete at the Tennessee Regional Science Bowl on February 26-27. Email nick.wilsey@knoxschools.org to declare your interest today!

·      Tickets for our fall dance on October 24, 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. here at the school are on sale now for $8/single or $14/couple in the Commons.  Can pay with cash or check made out to L&N STEM Academy (put “fall dance” in the memo line).

·      Attached is information about our trip to the upcoming National Science & Engineering Festival 2016 in Washington, DC, this coming April 13-17, 2016.  Ms. Jorgenson will also be taking a team of art honor society students to explore the wonderful (and free) art museums. You can see Ms. Ellis and Ms. Jorgenson to answer questions and collect deposits (due Nov 3, 2015).

Community  & Guidance Ops:
·      It’s time to be thinking about your entry in the PTA Reflections program. If you are talented in dance, film production, literature, music composition, photography or visual arts, consider entering this program. The deadline to apply is Friday, Nov. 6th by 4:30pm.  The theme for the 2015-2016 school year is Let Your Imagination Fly. This theme—created by Rachel Sperry of Northwood, N.D.—was selected through the Reflections Theme Search Contest. When asked what inspired her theme, Rachel said, "I tell myself to let my imagination fly when writing and sketching." The theme helps Rachel to explore her imagination and she hopes it will inspire others to be creative.  For more information or an entry form, contact Mrs. Morrell or Mrs. Jorgenson. Remember, the due dates for all entries is Nov. 6th by 4:30.

·      Do you have an open block N3 period?  Do you need community service hours?  TODAY, Oct 23, the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure needs your help to set up tables and chairs on the Worlds Fair Park event site.  Sign in to your Open Block as usual, then see Mrs. Ashe at the faculty table to find out where to report for them to put you to work and get credit for the hours (from 1:45 – 3:00).

·      In just a couple weeks you can support our school and help the community (and so can your parents!) at our annual MEDIC Blood Drive.  Students, parents, and teachers, mark your calendars to give the "gift of life" and participate in our MEDIC blood drive on Monday, November 2.
Students 16 and over are eligible to participate. If you're 16 and at least 120 lbs you may donate with parental consent. (Please use the form attached or come pick one up from Ms. Ellis in the Media Center.) Seventeen year olds who weigh 110 lbs or more may participate as well and DO NOT need consent. EVERYONE donating blood must have ID with them as well as a list of medications if appropriate. Please encourage your parents to contribute as well during our blood drive.   There will be a link to a sign up genius so you and your parents can make an appointment to donate.  The school receives a cash donation if we reach a certain number.  Please give!

·      Need community service hours?  Open Streets Knoxville is happening THIS Sunday, Oct 25th from 1 - 4 p.m., and we need a LOT of volunteers to make it a success. Volunteers will get a free Open Streets Knoxville t-shirt. Go here to find out more http://openstreetsknoxville.com/ or here to sign up: https://www.volunteersignup.org/TJ9LE

·      TN Promise will drop off books on November 10th from 8:45 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in the STEM Space.  Students who plan to participate in the TN Promise proceedings will be given a 10 minute overview of the qualification process and mandatory attendance dates.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
