3-28-17 Student Mission Briefing

GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Tuesday, March 28, 2017 – “L” day
L&N Student Mission – #Own it!

School Ops:
·      Lost ring – a ring was accidentally left in the downstairs girls’ bathroom in the Depot building during lunch yesterday.  It is a single blue stone ring.  It has great sentimental value.  If found, please turn it in to the office and we’ll get it back to its owner. Thank you for helping!

·      Kudos to senior Kieran Phelps for acceptance into the NSLI for Youth program.  This summer he will spend 6 weeks in Morocco studying Arabic.  That makes 2 years in a row the for L&N as last year Riley Hester participated in the same program and went to Moldova to study Russian.  STEM is truly worldwide!

·      Big congratulations to the L&N STEMpunks, our FIRST robotics team for winning the Entrepreneurship Award this weekend out of 48 teams at the Smoky Mountain Regional tournament!  Well done STEMpunks!

·      We’re still looking for that set of gray and black wireless headphones with “cb3” printed on the side.  They went missing out of an Algebra 2 class in the station early Friday afternoon.  If found, please turn in to the office!

·      Freshmen, Class of 2020:  Plan to be at the class social at Jump Jam, March 31, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Cost is $13.  To sign up and pay, there is a waiver form found here. Students must go to this link and then click the “myself” button. Once you click that, parents will put in their information. There is a button on the bottom that says, “add a child”. Click that, and you put in your information as well.   There is also a printable version here.  If possible it is encouraged to pay online because tickets get sold out quickly.  See everyone there! Questions, contact Freshman class president, Juan Benn.

·      Have you heard of STEM Fruved? We are a health-based student organization that has grown across college campuses that focuses on helping students manage their weight and live healthier by focusing on improving dietary intake, increasing physical activity, and improving overall stress management skills. The lead team at UT’s chapter wants to begin groups at high schools and we are their national pilot.  Your involvement will help them create a program that is attractive and useful to high school students across the country.  Please consider contributing to this prototyping by joining the group for its next meeting.  We meet in the STEM space on Monday’s from 3:30-4:30pm

·      Calling all artists!  How would you like your work featured in permanent paint on a public stormdrain in Knox County?  Seriously!  Knox County is looking for artists to paint storm drains to educate people about environmental issues.  There is a cash prize, and up to 10 artists will be chosen.  Applications are due May 1.  You can find more information here: https://www.knoxcounty.org/stormwater/strong_streams_art.php

·      THIS SATURDAY!  Make plans to join us for a pancake breakfast hosted by the Student Government Association on Saturday, April 1st from 8:30 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. The event will be held at the Chili’s restaurant located in West Knoxville at 7304 Kingston Pike. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. All proceeds benefit the Great Starts program, a service of the Helen Ross McNabb Center providing integrated substance abuse and mental health services to recovering pregnant and parenting women. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online here. Bring your family and friends and help us give back to our community!

Community  & Guidance Ops:
·      Don’t forget you should be completing your course requests online this week!  If you have questions plan on going to see your counselor (with teacher permission) Tuesday and Thursday this week from 12:30 – 3:30 (no appointment necessary) OR Wednesday from 9:30 – 12:30.  Follow directions that were given to you in Advisory last Friday!

·      A big “well done” to sophomores Joey Motto and Logan O’Neal who have both been accepted into UTK’s eVOL10 program this summer.  They’ll spend time on campus interacting with hand-picked future engineers from across the state and UTK’s faculty and grad students.  Way to represent the local crowd guys!

·      Congratulations to Riley Hester for her full tuition scholarship to George Mason University's Honors College – awarded to only fifteen to 20 new students each year.  These students receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship.  Along with their outstanding academic records, University Scholars each demonstrate excellence in three categories:  Intellectual vision and creativity, an ability to solve problems and overcome obstacles, a commitment to contributing to their communities - ranging from the local to the global.  Riley, your hard work and determination has paid off – we are proud of you!!!

·      All graduating L&N seniors are encouraged to apply for the Merlin Scholarship and the The Rebekah Ellis Honorary Scholarship for Service each worth $1,000. One winner for each will be selected and announced at the awards night in April.  All submissions must be received no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, April 7.   Follow this link to learn more about the scholarships, essay prompts and to apply.
