Did you
look at the testing schedule email sent by Mrs. Ashe yesterday? Just for clarification – when it says “makeup
days” that means no testing is scheduled and we will meet all regularly
scheduled classes. It is still a school
day and attendance is required. Pass it
on to your friends, please.

All
students – The freshman class is sponsoring a movie night for everyone. Come
join us this Friday (Friday the 13th 4/13/18) from 6-8:30pm for a movie night
in the commons. We will be watching the movie “Freaky Friday” and be serving
popcorn and drinks. There will also be a costume contest, come dressed like
someone else, the best look-a-like will win. There will be NO charge for
attending. Hope to see you all there and bring your friends!

Our SGA
attended the TN Association of School Councils’ State Meeting this weekend and
came home with: Outstanding Member of the
Year Award – Lucy Drinnen, AllStar Awards – Anna Horrocks, Lauren Morris, Ashley Waycaster, Above and Beyond Award – Anna Horrocks

Our students
competed at the TN state level of National History Day – and continued the
tradition of having at least one project moving on to Nationals! Congrats to 1st place Senior Group Documentary winners Lucy Drinnen and Reed
Freeman

Sophomores! In case you haven't seen the posters up
already, your class social will be at Main Event Entertainment (9081 Kingston
Pike) on this Friday (April 13th) at 6 pm. Bring some money with you to play
some games or grab a bite to eat, or just come and hang out! We hope to see you

EARTH WEEK OPS:
Climate
Change is still a highly debated topic that over 97% of the scientific
community believes is occurring. Here are today’s facts on Climate change!

The 16
hottest years globally have been recorded since 2000.
·
There has
been a 30 percent increase in acidity of world’s oceans
·
The globally
temperature has increased by 1.8o F in the last century.
·
The sea
level has increased 7 inches since the last century with the trend being a few
millimeters every year.
·
Included in
Earth Week is a presentation on Climate Change TODAY, 4/10. This will
cover the Paris Climate agreement and other Climate Change issues. The
presentation will happen during every lunch. Please RSVP in which

· Hey
Gryphons! As part of Earth week this week the Powersave Energy Genius Hour is
sponsoring a photo competition. Your assignment is to take an ORIGINAL photo
demonstrating some form of pollution and submit a png file to s755125@student.knoxschools.org by
Mon, April 9th. Please make the subject of the Email PHOTO COMPETITION. Any
photo is accepted, your photo does not have to be local. You will be judged on
clarity of subject, originality, and authentic display. There are 3 categories,
land, air and water pollution. There will be monetary awards to 1st, 2nd, and
3rd place. There will also be a grand prize awarded to the overall winner based
on a school-wide vote. All winning Photographs will be put on display. Winners
will be announced on Thursday April 12th.

Energy GH is also sponsoring a short story
competition. There will be no maximum or minimum page number, but remember that
a reasonable amount of pages gives you a better chance of winning. Your prompt
is, “In the near or distant future, what is happening on earth and what will
the earth look like.” This must relate to climate and/or energy. You may submit
a digital or hard copy. To submit digitally please email to s755125@student.knoxschools.org BY
April 10th with a subject of Writing Competition. To submit as a hard copy
please place your story in the cardboard box in the office ON April 10th. Your
short story will be judged on creativity, knowledge of subject, and clear
storytelling technique. There will be monetary prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
place. Also, ALL stories will be submitted to the English department
for extra credit in your respective class.
Community & Guidance Ops:

Systers: Women in EECS
@ UTK (Systers) is a volunteer student organization at the University of
Tennessee –Knoxville – is hosting an outreach event called “Little
Systers” on Sat, April 14. This event will inform and inspire high school
females about such possibilities for their futures through positive, firsthand
experiences. Systers is afforded the opportunity to continue to inspire young
women to pursue science, technology, and engineering through Little
Systers. This event is limited to 90 student participants, so students
should be sure to register soon! This event is free and lunch will be
provided.

[Knoxville] By Design
- www.knoxbydesign.org In April the local architecture
community will host fun events for the public. Students will be especially
excited about very first LEGO competition Knox Bricks & Blocks. Students
will be teamed with designers to create a unique tower in a limited amount
of time, all while competing for various "best of" prizes. Check out

Summer opportunity: The
Young Scholars Program (YSP) is for high school sophomores, juniors, and
seniors, and it's a great opportunity to get some hands-on research in
engineering before college. This is a competitive application process, so
students will need to submit transcripts and 2 letters of recommendation, as
well as a personal statement. That program runs July 2 - 27th, and
information can be found here: http://curent.utk.edu/education/pre-college/youngscholars/ The program runs on campus at the University
of TN through the CURENT group. We’ve had students participate in the
past and loved it!

soon! Jeff Zentner (http://www.jeffzentnerbooks.com/) is coming to speak to our school on Monday, April
16th during M4. Many thanks to our wonderful PTSA for sponsoring this event!
