4-20-18 Student Mission Briefing

GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Friday, April 20, 2018 – N-day
School Mission – Boundless STEM: Learning & Leading
L&N Student Mission – #Own it!

School Ops:
·      If you missed any subsection of any EOC this week Mrs. Salerno will send you a personal email to tell you where to go and when for makeup sessions today.  See the EOC testing schedule at the bottom for today’s US History tests and locations.  Remember to bring your computer, fully charged, to testing daily.

·      Be sure to come visit the Dogwood Arts Festival Chalkwalk this Saturday in Market Square and Krutch Park, enjoy the beautiful chalk art and support your L&N STEM Academy National Art Honor Society by voting for our team by 4pm. We will notify about our location via Twitter and the PTSA Facebook page. Thanks!

·      Are you interested in math? All students who have completed at least 2 math classes and have a current math GPA of 3.25 are welcome to join the school’s chapter of the Mu Alpha Theta, a national math honor society. If you have only completed 1 math class, you can still join as an Associate member. As a member of Mu Alpha Theta, you will have the opportunity to participate in math challenges and competitions. If you are eligible and wish to join, please fill out the interest form at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf5pOWWcx4ybpDObLhLuUIhnZgaimDI8GhhPDUnntnuLasXVw/viewform?usp=sf_link

·      Our SGA is hosting a school-wide cleanup day THIS Saturday, and we need your help! Meet at the school in the commons from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on April 21st to help us mulch, plant, and pick up trash around campus to improve the school. Food will be provided! If you plan to attend, if possible, please sign up to bring tools through this sign up genius http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0e48a4ae28a4fc1-april. Hope to see you there!

·      Here’s something fun to take your mind off testing for a moment – it is time to vote for the PTSA Teacher and Support Person of the Year Awards!  This student-voted recognition will be presented at the spring awards event next Thursday night.  Let your favorite teacher and staff member have your support!  You must use your @knoxschools email address to log in, and you may only vote once in each poll.

·      Want to visit Paul Revere’s house, see Harvard Square, or tour the Lexington Battle Green? Interested in exploring Greenwich Village, SOHO, Chinatown, and Little Italy? Ready to see the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, the MET, and two Broadway shows? Due to overwhelming student requests, I will be hosting a spring break trip to New York and Boston in 2019. On Monday, April 23, we will host an enrollment meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the STEM Space. At this meeting, we will discuss the specific itinerary, pricing, and travel details. Please complete this form if you are interested in attending the meeting and/or trip: https://goo.gl/forms/OFoCVKpCMAzHJpFx2

·      Plan on coming TONIGHT to our PTA Spring fundraiser!  Bring your parents, $5 entry fee gets you 2 music shows on the plaza, food trucks where you can buy dinner, and a wide variety of items to bid on – including a student parking pass on campus for 2018-19 school year (student does not have to be a senior to win)!

·      Any boys or girls interested in playing golf next fall contact Mr. Waxmonsky.  The season starts before the first day of school. You can talk to him in person or at mark.waxmonsky@knoxschools.org for information about tryouts.

·      Make sure that from the 16th-27th you bring in canned pet food, bagged dry pet food, peanut butter, and other pet supplies to help out our local Young Williams Animal Shelter! Bring in your donations to a table in the commons and record on this google form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdRGBMKiatZS2bETBGr1k4oAWiZayQ08_Dl8Okd2ddlyE8veg/viewform?usp=sf_link ) how much you bring in for your advisory. The advisory with the most donations by the 27th will win a doughnut party!

Community  & Guidance Ops:
·      An admissions representative from Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate TN, will be in Guidance Wednesday, April 25 during Genius Hour.

·      Summer opportunity: The Young Scholars Program (YSP) is for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and it's a great opportunity to get some hands-on research in engineering before college. This is a competitive application process, so students will need to submit transcripts and 2 letters of recommendation, as well as a personal statement. That program runs July 2 - 27th, and information can be found here: http://curent.utk.edu/education/pre-college/youngscholars/  The program runs on campus at the University of TN through the CURENT group.  We’ve had students participate in the past and loved it!

Quote of the day from Henry Ford:

When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.
