GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Friday, April 27, 2018 – N-day
School Mission – Boundless STEM: Learning & Leading
L&N Student Mission – #Own it!

School Ops:
·      Today’s state tests are Integrated Math I, Geometry, and Algebra II.  See the schedule at the bottom of announcements.

·      Look for tables set up today during lunch asking you to participate in a taste test.  Help your fellow classmates with their statistics project. They need as many students as possible to participate.

·      Looking for a green and black umbrella that went missing on Thursday.  If found please turn in to the office.

·      Gryphons! It's that time of the year again, and the general application to join Gryphon Guides for the 2018-19 school year, is now open! Everyone has the chance to apply, even if you are not currently in the club. The application will close May 4th, so be sure to apply soon!  https://goo.gl/forms/LoWgGxIPdMO4wQTz2

·      The Second Annual STEM Film Festival will be held this Monday, April 30th 7-9pm. Come see films directed, written, and produced by students during the 2017-2018 school year, all of which star some of L&N’s most talented Gryphons! Films will be judged by a panel of student experts from both Theatre Arts and Journalism. Our students are eager to show you what they have produced this year, so be sure to meet us in the Commons Monday night at 7pm!

·      SGA is hosting a Game Night event for everyone this Friday, 4/27 from 6:00 – 9:00! Join us for food, video games, board games, or just come to hang out! Admission is free, however, there will be pizza and drinks for sale. If there are any other questions, please email me, and I will be more than happy to help.  Additionally, please complete this Google forum to state whether or not you are able to attend. https://goo.gl/forms/egLgnVuJEY40How02

·      If you are interested in trying out for the Bowling Team for the 2018-19 season please see Mr. Parker during Genius Hours, or before/after school in the PE room.  Bowling season starts in early August.

·      Students, this week is election week. Please pay close attention to who is running for leadership of your class so that you can make the most informed decision about your representation in the Student Government Association and also note that separate elections are held for executive board. Class boards represent you directly and make decisions concerning your class; the executive board governs the SGA in general and are concerned with making the school and student life the best that they can be. If you want to know more about the candidates running for office, find time to ask them what plans they have for helping to make your school what you want it to be.

·      Are you interested in math? All students who have completed at least 2 math classes and have a current math GPA of 3.25 are welcome to join the school’s chapter of the Mu Alpha Theta, a national math honor society. If you have only completed 1 math class, you can still join as an Associate member. As a member of Mu Alpha Theta, you will have the opportunity to participate in math challenges and competitions. If you are eligible and wish to join, please fill out the interest form at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf5pOWWcx4ybpDObLhLuUIhnZgaimDI8GhhPDUnntnuLasXVw/viewform?usp=sf_link

·      Any boys or girls interested in playing golf next fall contact Mr. Waxmonsky.  The season starts before the first day of school. You can talk to him in person or at mark.waxmonsky@knoxschools.org for information about tryouts.

·      Make sure that from the 16th-27th you bring in canned pet food, bagged dry pet food, peanut butter, and other pet supplies to help out our local Young Williams Animal Shelter! Bring in your donations to a table in the commons and record on this google form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdRGBMKiatZS2bETBGr1k4oAWiZayQ08_Dl8Okd2ddlyE8veg/viewform?usp=sf_link ) how much you bring in for your advisory. The advisory with the most donations by the 27th will win a doughnut party!

Community  & Guidance Ops:
·      Summer opportunity: The Young Scholars Program (YSP) is for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and it's a great opportunity to get some hands-on research in engineering before college. This is a competitive application process, so students will need to submit transcripts and 2 letters of recommendation, as well as a personal statement. That program runs July 2 - 27th, and information can be found here: http://curent.utk.edu/education/pre-college/youngscholars/  The program runs on campus at the University of TN through the CURENT group.  We’ve had students participate in the past and loved it!

Quote of the day from Thomas Edison:

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up.  The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.
