4-16-18 Student Mission Briefing

GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Monday, April 16, 2018 – M-day
EARLY RELEASE SCHEDULE
School Mission – Boundless STEM: Learning & Leading
L&N Student Mission – #Own it!

School Ops:
·      Any boys or girls interested in playing golf next fall contact Mr. Waxmonsky.  The season starts before the first day of school. You can talk to him in person or at mark.waxmonsky@knoxschools.org for information about tryouts.

·      Make sure that from the 16th-27th you bring in canned pet food, bagged dry pet food, peanut butter, and other pet supplies to help out our local Young Williams Animal Shelter! Bring in your donations to a table in the commons and record on this google form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdRGBMKiatZS2bETBGr1k4oAWiZayQ08_Dl8Okd2ddlyE8veg/viewform?usp=sf_link ) how much you bring in for your advisory. The advisory with the most donations by the 27th will win a doughnut party!

·      TODAY!  Author and Nashville native Jeff Zentner will be speaking to our school on Monday during M4, ask your teacher if your class can go.  Students may not attend without permission. Bring a copy of one of his books to sign – and remember to dress for the chilly weather!

·      Calling all writers: Author Jeff Zentner will be offering a writing workshop for anyone interested during our early release hour! Seriously, don't miss this opportunity. Sign up here to attend. Location on campus will be announced later.

·      Congratulations to Campbell Maben (9th Grade Violin) and Kieran Maben (9th Grade Double Bass) on their excellent auditions at TMEA All-State Orchestra! Campbell placed 8th out of 18, and Kieran placed 3rd out of 9! This is an extraordinary accomplishment for 9th grade students. They will be performing with the top orchestral musicians in Tennessee this Saturday in Nashville. Four years straight of our musical Gryphons making state!

·      Get ready for some delicious ice cream during early release on Monday, April 16th. Cruze Farms generously donated ice cream to be sold for only $3 (cash only). This is the Junior Class Fundraiser for the year. Grab some delicious ice cream and help the Junior Class raise money for their senior gift. I look forward to enjoying this treat with all of you!

Community  & Guidance Ops:
·      Summer opportunity: The Young Scholars Program (YSP) is for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and it's a great opportunity to get some hands-on research in engineering before college. This is a competitive application process, so students will need to submit transcripts and 2 letters of recommendation, as well as a personal statement. That program runs July 2 - 27th, and information can be found here: http://curent.utk.edu/education/pre-college/youngscholars/  The program runs on campus at the University of TN through the CURENT group.  We’ve had students participate in the past and loved it!
