GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Friday, April 13, 2018 – N-day
School Mission – Boundless STEM: Learning & Leading
L&N Student Mission – #Own it!

School Ops:
·      Pay attention in Advisory today to the testing schedule for the next two weeks.  Know what you’re supposed to be doing!

·      Don’t forget that the window for course request changes closes at 4:30 today (Friday!).

·      Happy Prom weekend – be safe and make good decisions prom-goers!

·      Interested in Choir for next year?  Register today for Vocal Music or Choral Ensemble!  Mrs. Philips will email you in the next few weeks if she wants to hear you sing, but don’t miss your chance, register today!  Follow us at @LN_Choirs!

·      Join in the fun with today being Friday, the 13th.  The freshmen class is sponsoring a schoolwide costume contest and movie showing to celebrate “Freaky Friday!”  Come join us by dressing up as a look-alike with someone to attend a movie night in the commons from 6:00 – 8:30. We will be watching the movie “Freaky Friday” and be serving popcorn and drinks and awarding prizes for best costumes!

·      There's still time....! Read one of his books before he comes on Monday...!   Author and Nashville native Jeff Zentner will be speaking to our school on Monday during M4, ask your teacher if your class can go.  Students may not attend without permission. Stop by the library to check out one of his books (The Serpent King or Goodbye Days). Or better yet, get your own copy so he can sign it on Monday!

·      Calling all writers: Author Jeff Zentner will be offering a writing workshop for anyone interested during our early release hour! Seriously, don't miss this opportunity. Sign up here to attend. Location on campus will be announced later.

·      Congratulations to Campbell Maben (9th Grade Violin) and Kieran Maben (9th Grade Double Bass) on their excellent auditions at TMEA All-State Orchestra! Campbell placed 8th out of 18, and Kieran placed 3rd out of 9! This is an extraordinary accomplishment for 9th grade students. They will be performing with the top orchestral musicians in Tennessee this Saturday in Nashville. Four years straight of our musical Gryphons making state!

·      Get ready for some delicious ice cream during early release on Monday, April 16th. Cruze Farms generously donated ice cream to be sold for only $3 (cash only). This is the Junior Class Fundraiser for the year. Grab some delicious ice cream and help the Junior Class raise money for their senior gift. I look forward to enjoying this treat with all of you!

·      Sophomores! In case you haven't seen the posters up already, your class social will be at Main Event Entertainment (9081 Kingston Pike) on this Friday (April 13th) at 6 pm. Bring some money with you to play some games or grab a bite to eat, or just come and hang out! We hope to see you there!

SPECIAL EARTH WEEK OPS:
·      As we wrap up Earth week I’d like to leave you with a question, “How should we solve the world’s energy crisis?” Look for the whiteboard in the Commons to add your ideas!
Community  & Guidance Ops:
·      Systers: Women in EECS @ UTK (Systers) is a volunteer student organization at the University of Tennessee –Knoxville – is hosting an outreach event called “Little Systers” on Sat, April 14. This event will inform and inspire high school females about such possibilities for their futures through positive, firsthand experiences. Systers is afforded the opportunity to continue to inspire young women to pursue science, technology, and engineering through Little Systers. This event is limited to 90 student participants, so students should be sure to register soon! This event is free and lunch will be provided.

·       [Knoxville] By Design - www.knoxbydesign.org  In  April the local architecture community will host fun events for the public. Students will be especially excited about very first LEGO competition Knox Bricks & Blocks. Students will be teamed with designers to create a unique tower in a limited amount of time, all while competing for various "best of" prizes. Check out the link.

·      Summer opportunity: The Young Scholars Program (YSP) is for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and it's a great opportunity to get some hands-on research in engineering before college. This is a competitive application process, so students will need to submit transcripts and 2 letters of recommendation, as well as a personal statement. That program runs July 2 - 27th, and information can be found here: http://curent.utk.edu/education/pre-college/youngscholars/  The program runs on campus at the University of TN through the CURENT group.  We’ve had students participate in the past and loved it!
