4-23-18 Student Mission Briefing

GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Monay, April 23, 2018 – M-day
EARLY RELEASE SCHEDULE
School Mission – Boundless STEM: Learning & Leading
L&N Student Mission – #Own it!

School Ops:
·      As we enter the last 4 weeks of school, students are reminded of the following school rules.  Your enthusiastic compliance will help us all have an enjoyable end to the school year.  Infractions will face disciplinary consequences:
o  As the weather is pretty more students are eating on the plaza.  A crew spent Saturday cleaning campus – avoid being required to be part of the next crew and clean up after yourself.  Do not leave food, containers, plastics, or other trash around the grounds.  They draw bugs and are unsightly.  Remember the alternative is to not allow food anywhere but the Commons and Verandah – and no one wants it that crowded.
o  If you’re carrying food to a classroom to eat with a teacher be sure there is an adult in the room.  With the single exception of the peer tutoring room (210), students are NEVER to be in classroom spaces before, during, or after the school day when there is no adult present.
o  Remember tops must have wide bands, no spaghetti straps or cold shoulders with thin straps.  Tops must meet waistbands when standing up – no bare midriffs exposed.  And although the school board changed the language – booty-like shorts are not appropriate for the school environment.  Leave the short shorts and micro-mini skirts for your weekend wear, please!

·      Are you interested in math? All students who have completed at least 2 math classes and have a current math GPA of 3.25 are welcome to join the school’s chapter of the Mu Alpha Theta, a national math honor society. If you have only completed 1 math class, you can still join as an Associate member. As a member of Mu Alpha Theta, you will have the opportunity to participate in math challenges and competitions. If you are eligible and wish to join, please fill out the interest form at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf5pOWWcx4ybpDObLhLuUIhnZgaimDI8GhhPDUnntnuLasXVw/viewform?usp=sf_link

·      Want to visit Paul Revere’s house, see Harvard Square, or tour the Lexington Battle Green? Interested in exploring Greenwich Village, SOHO, Chinatown, and Little Italy? Ready to see the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, the MET, and two Broadway shows? Due to overwhelming student requests, I will be hosting a spring break trip to New York and Boston in 2019. On Monday, April 23, we will host an enrollment meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the STEM Space. At this meeting, we will discuss the specific itinerary, pricing, and travel details. Please complete this form if you are interested in attending the meeting and/or trip: https://goo.gl/forms/OFoCVKpCMAzHJpFx2

·      Any boys or girls interested in playing golf next fall contact Mr. Waxmonsky.  The season starts before the first day of school. You can talk to him in person or at mark.waxmonsky@knoxschools.org for information about tryouts.

·      Make sure that from the 16th-27th you bring in canned pet food, bagged dry pet food, peanut butter, and other pet supplies to help out our local Young Williams Animal Shelter! Bring in your donations to a table in the commons and record on this google form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdRGBMKiatZS2bETBGr1k4oAWiZayQ08_Dl8Okd2ddlyE8veg/viewform?usp=sf_link ) how much you bring in for your advisory. The advisory with the most donations by the 27th will win a doughnut party!

Community  & Guidance Ops:
·      An admissions representative from Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate TN, will be in Guidance Wednesday, April 25 during Genius Hour.

·      Summer opportunity: The Young Scholars Program (YSP) is for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and it's a great opportunity to get some hands-on research in engineering before college. This is a competitive application process, so students will need to submit transcripts and 2 letters of recommendation, as well as a personal statement. That program runs July 2 - 27th, and information can be found here: http://curent.utk.edu/education/pre-college/youngscholars/  The program runs on campus at the University of TN through the CURENT group.  We’ve had students participate in the past and loved it!
