School Ops:

·      Update from the FIRST Robotic Team Pit!  L&N STEMpunks competed at Bayou Regional Robotics competition in New Orleans over spring break and won 4 awards. First and foremost the team won the Imagery Award in honor of Jack Kamen.  This award celebrates attractiveness in engineering and outstanding visual aesthetic integration of machine and team appearance.

They won the Bayou Alligator award for the best robot cart that participated in the opening ceremonies, the Top Banana award for best looking team shirts; and finally Rachel Barrick won the Best Second Line Dancer award for the most spirit and skills during the New Orleans Jazz Band and Second Line!
Additionally, they will be in action again this week at the Smoky Mountains Regional at Thompson Boling arena on Friday and Saturday.  There are practice matches Thursday and in competition on Friday and Saturday.  The team is asking students and staff to wear their STEM gear and come out and cheer them on after school and Sat. Competition is from 8-6 and attendance is free. Come out and support the L&N STEMpunks team#3966! Hope to see you there!

·      New overseas trip being planned for fall break 2020 to Italy and Greece!  Come find out more on April 11 at 6:00 in the Commons with Mr. Blythe and the Global Gryphons! Spots ae limited so don’t miss out!

·      The L&N STEM Boys & Girls Tennis Teams defeated Pigeon Forge on Tuesday 8-0. Freshmen Hunter Shupe and Mia Carter both achieved the first varsity win of their high school careers! Next match is scheduled for April 4^th against Alcoa. Go Gryphons!

·      Interested in discount coupons for tuxedo rentals?  Stop by the office to pick one up for Regal Tuxedo, located in Windsor Square and Knoxville Center.  Thank you, Mrs. Brown!

·      It looks like everyone is shopping for and unpacking their warm weather clothes – just a reminder – no thin/spaghetti straps, shoulders must be covered (that means “cold shoulder” tops should have a thick band and not be worn off the shoulder), torso of all genders should be covered – front and back (no bare stomach/midriff or bare back), and shorts and skirts should at least cover the upper thigh (no “booty” shorts or micro-minis).  Think in terms of dressing for the kind of job/future you want – keep your weekend and party wear for those occasions – not school.  Thank you for your cooperation and not making your teachers and administrators have to be fashion police.  You don’t want us to hassle you and we have other things to do.

·      Nine members of our Key Club attended the 2019 Kentucky-Tennessee District Convention this past weekend in Franklin, TN and brought home three trophies! 1st Place for Impromptu Essay Contest: Turner Rogers with his extremely impressive writing skills; 1st Place Talent Contest: Madeline Maben with her fabulous piano performance; & 2nd Place Single Service Project: L&N STEM Key Club's 'Warm Thoughts' Scarf Community Outreach Project. Congratulations STEM Key Club Members!

·      Congratulations to these L&N Art students whose work was recognized in the annual Knox County Council PTA Reflections Award Ceremony Monday night: Photography; 1st Place Cameron Ramsey, 2nd Place Delaney Martin, 3rd Place Chloe Weaver; Visual Art 1st Place; Rachel Barrick, 2nd Place Kirsten Carter, 3rd Place Nathan Dale and Dance Choreography; 1st Place Kate Jolly. Way to represent the creative side of STEM!

·      This week REDUCE your junk at home by donating old wash rags and no-longer-used cellphones! REUSING rags to bathe kittens at Young Williams animal shelter and RECYCLING cell phone parts to spare animal habitats in Africa is a great way to kick off spring cleaning! Look for donation boxes at front desk, or bring your donations to Mrs. Elliott.

·      Seniors:  continue watching the Scholarship Bulletin on the School Counseling website.  There still are scholarships to apply for, though some with close deadlines.

·      Our PTSA has 2 scholarships available for graduating seniors - The scholarship contest info is all found here:  http://ptsalnstem.weebly.com/scholarships.html  Deadline for submissions is 5:00 pm, Sunday, April 7.

·      The Kiwanis Club of Northside Knoxville, Inc. and its associated Student Fund announce the availability of grants based on an individual’s service to the community. These grants are available to any Knox County resident who is or is planning on being enrolled in an accredited institute of higher learning in the coming year, and who has not previously received a scholarship or grant from any Kiwanis-affiliated organization. Submission as a recommendation from a third party is acceptable. Submissions must be made before March 31. Here is the form.
