4-12-19 Student Mission Briefing

GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Friday, April 12, 2019 – N-day
School Mission – Boundless STEM: Learning & Leading
L&N Student Mission – #Own it!

School Ops:
·         We will meet in ADVISORY groups today.  Go to your regularly scheduled Friday Advisory – check with your teacher if you don’t remember which lunch to eat.  You need the information being reviewed about testing in Advisory today!

·         Our elevator is down for repairs until further notice (hopefully no later than Monday).  We have reached out to those we think will be most affected, but if you have restricted mobility, please stop by or email the office so we can make arrangements to accommodate your needs while it is being repaired.

·      Today is GLSEN's National Day of Silence. The Day of Silence is an event in which students voluntarily refrain from speaking so as to represent the silence many LGBTQIA+ students are forced to endure. L&N Equality Club will be actively participating in this event and, should you wish to join them in being silent or in other forms of support, meet them on the plaza at 8:30 this morning! (Note that the Day of Silence does not allow you to skip presentations in class or any other forms of responding to a teacher if asked to respond).

·      Our musical Gryphons are representing well at the All State event in Nashville this week.  Gretta Berry has done very well in the  Women’s Choir, and in instrumental, students have earned these recognitions:
§  Marcus Lee: 1st chair, 1st Bassoon – blue band.  He chaired principal bassoon and 1st in the entire state for 11th-12th grade – a first for our school!
§  Connor McGinley: 10th chair, 2nd violin – Symphony Orchestra
§  Campbell Maben: 10th chair, 1st violin – String Orchestra
§  Maddie Maben: 3rd chair, cello – String Orchestra
§  Kieran Maben: 2nd chair, double bass – String Orchestra

·      Juniors/Seniors attending prom: be sure to pick up your tickets from Mrs. Brown today.  All guest applications must be turned in before Saturday.  NO tickets will be sold at the door.  Plan to come early from 6:00 – 7:00 to the Southern Railway Depot to get your picture made in one of the train cars.  Prom photography will be available throughout the dance inside the venue, the train car is a special arrangement for 1 hour only.

·      The L&N STEMpunks are heading to the World Championships in Houston, Texas, but we need your help to reach our fundraising goal! Please go to the link below to purchase one our new L&N STEMpunks keychains, a team shirt, or to make a donation! We appreciate your support! https://squareup.com/store/l-and-n-stempunks-inc

·      Congrats to all the winners at the 3rd Annual L&N Film Fest!  If you weren’t here Tuesday night you missed first screenings of future big shot directors, writers, and producers!  For a complete list of winners – see below.

·      Rising juniors and seniors – are you interested in taking Dual Enrollment classes this summer or fall?  You need to come to an informational meeting to learn what to do and how to do it.  There will be one Friday, 4/12, at 8:30 in G006.  Meetings last about 40 minutes.  Email Mrs. Morrell if you have questions.

·      Thanks to the L&N Art Honor Society for our new portable Wings mural now on display in the Commons. The design was by Hila Williford, and she painted it with Cameron Ramsey, Rachel Barrick, Josie Bresler, Jennifer Butler, Kirsten Carter, Helena Delzer and Lydia Foster.  Stop by and take a picture with them and if you tweet please tag our school @LNSTEMAC and/or #GryphonWings

·         April 8-12 Blind Date with a Book!  As testing season approaches, you'll need a good book to help you escape the stress.  Gather up your courage and drop by the L&N STEM Academy Library next week for a chance encounter that could turn into the real thing!

Where have you been all my life? The books will be wrapped so you can't judge them by their covers (it’s what’s inside that counts, right?) and each one will have a classified ad on it describing its perfect reader. Could you possibly be the one?

You'll never know unless you try! Check it out and go on a date. ...don't worry, if the match doesn't work, you can always return the book and try again. It shouldn't surprise you that sometimes it takes a couple tries to find that special connection.   It starts on Monday and will last all week!

·         The Class of 2019 will be hosting a Tournament/Game Night Monday, April 15th from 5-8pm with all proceeds going to the senior gift. The event is free to attend but there will be $5 Smash Bros tournaments and tournaments for spike-ball and foursquare, where the winners will win prizes and participants will have the opportunity to win. Attendees will be able to buy pizza, chips, drinks, and desserts. Plan to attend if you want to have a great time and win some awesome prizes.

Community  & Guidance Ops:
·         A representative from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore MD, will be at STEM on Tuesday, April 16 at 7:00pm.  Parents, students, friends all are welcome.

·         All students, here is the last opportunity to visit nearby college campuses as they host special open house events: (more detail can be found on the School Counseling/Calendar website)
o    Maryville College Saturday, April 13

·         Seniors:  continue watching the Scholarship Bulletin on the School Counseling website.  There still are scholarships to apply for, though some with close deadlines.
