8-15-16 Student Mission Briefing

GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Monday, August 15, 2016 – “M” day
L&N Student Mission – #Own it!

School Ops:
·      Students – pay attention to the schedule at the bottom of announcements today!  Times are changed because on Monday’s we have “Early Release”.  School dismisses at 3:30.
o   If you have a way off campus you need to leave immediately.  Any student who needs to stay to wait for a ride or bus will report to the Commons until 4:30 (or your ride gets here) for quiet study time.
o   If you have Digital Labs and are coming in late – pay attention to when classes start – don’t be late!

·      The Downtown YMCA is offering a special membership for L&N STEM students.  Students can join the YMCA for $50 for the school year. (that is a steal - normal health club memberships are $20 - $30 /month).  The membership is only good for use at the Lindsey Young Downtown YMCA.   The Downtown YMCA is about a 5 minute walk from STEM (605 Clinch Ave).  YMCA membership personnel will be at the L&N STEM Open House Tuesday night to sell student and family memberships.  Tell your parents about this great opportunity! If you have any questions ask Mr. Parker or Dr. Bretscher

·      Make plans to attend Open House, Tuesday, August 16, 6:00 – 8:00.  PTSA will cookout burgers, dogs, chips, cookies, & water from 5:30 – 6:30.

·      Congratulations to our student body and faculty!  For the second year in a row we’ve been named to Newsweek’s List of the Top High Schools in the country for Beating the Odds (we’re #426).  See more here http://www.newsweek.com/high-schools/beating-odds-2016

·      There will be a general interest meeting for students to find out more about joining our national award-winning TSA chapter next Wednesday, Aug 17, from 4:45 – 5:30 in room M052.  Questions?  Contact S735626@student.knoxschools.org for more info.  Here are some links to explore for more about TSA as an organization and our chapter in particular:

·      Heads up to drivers and parents – one lane of Worlds Fair Park Drive will be closed next Friday, Aug 19, at dismissal.  You will not be able to wait for students in your usual location.  You should arrange to meet rides either in the parking lot of KMA or down Grand Avenue.

·      Spirit week is October 17 – 21, order your Spirit Week t-shirts this week and next during lunch.  They are $15 until August 19, and then the price will go up!  Order now!  Cash or check payable to “L&N STEM”.

Community  & Guidance Ops:
·      In-Home Tutoring will be hosting a Free Mock ACT on Saturday, August 27 at 9 a.m. for all Knox County students, at ITT tech. Students will get their results before they leave and will get to keep their tests for their review. Limited seating is available, so students need to pre-register to make sure they have a seat.  This is a great practice opportunity before the September test.  Sign-up directly from their website at  www.KnoxvilleTutor.com
