“L” Day Classes
·
Girls
Cross Country brings home our first team athletic trophy! On Saturday our girls placed second in the
A/AA school division of the Hardin Valley Invitational. On top of the team standing, 4 girls placed
in the top ten as individuals! Congrats
to all our cross country runners and especially to Laura Bretscher (placed 5th), Rachel Magers (placed 7th), Isabelle DeFreese (placed 9th), and Brook Foster (placed 10th). See the girls with their trophy at the
bottom of announcements!
· Students: In order to enjoy the freedoms of being able
to use the plaza before, during, and after school, we need to keep our areas
clean. Our neighbors at the Convention Center stated that several of our
students had left old milk cartons at their loading dock. Please clean up
after yourself. It is not the image that we want to project.
· Students we know you are excited about the Makerspace. It is a work in progress as we continue to
get equipment in, placed, and ready for use.
We absolutely MUST follow procedures for students to have access to this
area and equipment – and that includes NOT using equipment until you’ve
completed safety training and have an approved project on which to work. Students failing to follow requests and
procedures will result in revocation of access to the space at all. Thank you.
· Seniors and parents are invited to Senior information night
on Tuesday, Sept 9, from 5:30 – 6:30 in our Commons area. Junior parent night is Sept 25 from 5:30 –
6:30. Come hear about deadlines and
responsibilities in these important years!
· The L&N's FIRST Robotics Team (the L&N STEMpunks)
will be having an interest meeting for all aspiring members September 5th. This meeting will
take place in the STEM Space right after school 4:30-6:00. If you have any
questions feel free to email s039921@student.knoxschools.org
· Students,
it's that time again! The prom committee are helping get you ready for spirit
week by selling the color-war day t-shirts! There is a shirt for each grade,
9th-12th. They are white shirts with colored "Class of 2015" (or your
graduation year) on the back and a miniature gryphon on the front. The
Freshman are red, Sophomores are blue, Juniors are green, and Seniors are
yellow. The shirts are $15 dollars. They are on sale during all lunch periods
and in the mornings. Checks and cash are accepted as payment. The shirts
will be on sale for the next few weeks! Buy one while you still can and help
make this year's prom great!
· You don’t have to douse yourself in ice! The Walk to Defeat ALS is September 13,
starting at 9 am. One of our students is organizing a team in honor of her
grandmother who is fighting ALS. All students and staff are invited to
participate at the walk and to help support the ALS Association, which has done
so much for all people with ALS. The
link for the sign-up is <http://webtn.alsa.org/goto/teamflash>. If
anyone has any questions, the student organizer’s contact info is on that
website.
From the Guidance
Office:
PSAT Registration is now open! The PSAT is
an optional test open to any interested 9th-11th grade student.
Students are able to take this test all three years if they desire.
Juniors wishing to participate in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Competition must take the
PSAT this year in order to be considered for eligibility.
Benefits of taking the PSAT can be found through the following links
which are also posted under 'Testing Info' on the 'College and Career'
page:
Students can find the
PSAT registration form on the 'College and Career' page of our
website (under the School Counseling tab on main page). The
registration form and $14 fee may be submitted to Mrs. Johnson in the Guidance
office. Registration deadline is September
19th!
From
Score-TN: L&N student Josh Witt won
this contest as a video entry last year.
Students know first-hand that their teachers are working hard to prepare
them for success after high school with learning they will use in the real
world, whether going to college or career. To help others understand how this
work is changing lives, SCORE is inviting Tennessee public school students to
submit an original essay, song, poem, or video that addresses the following:
• Grades 9-12: Give a real world example of how you
are using knowledge and skills you’ve learned in your math or English classes.
To
get you started, here are a few examples. Write a song to explain how learning
about the different types of clouds can help you predict the weather. Create a
video showing how your algebra skills help you split a bill in a restaurant.
Please don’t feel that you are limited to these ideas! SCORE values creativity
and originality, so we encourage you to think outside the box when crafting
your entries.
The
deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. Central on Monday, September 15, 2014.
Please note, students must work singly on their entries and we cannot accept
team submissions. Read more about how to prepare
and submit your entry.
After
semifinalists are selected, a poll on SCORE’s Facebook page will determine
the finalists in each category. Finalists will be interviewed before the
winners are selected. Follow the hashtags #SCOREprize and #TNrttc on Twitter
and Facebook to keep up with the excitement.
Winners
will be awarded a $250 college scholarship and will share their work at the
SCORE Prize event on Monday, October 27, in Nashville. Fellow students,
educators from across Tennessee, and special guest performer Dustin Lynch will
all be present at the event.
Students
Rise to the Challenge is a way for Tennessee to hear from those who are most
affected by the work to raise academic achievement: our students. Start working
on your entry today!
