9-5-18 Student Mission Briefing

GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Wednesday, September 5, 2018 – N-day
School Mission – Boundless STEM: Learning & Leading
L&N Student Mission – #Own it!

School Ops:
·        Students thank you for your ideation about lunches during Advisory on Friday.  We heard you.  We want to test this idea this week only and will debrief and ask for your thoughts during this week’s Advisory on Friday.  Based on your feedback, here is how the test will work:
o   The “bell” schedule will be 1st lunch goes from 12:19 – 12:55, 2nd lunch will run from 1:00 – 1:35.  3rd block will start at 1:41.  We will use this schedule all week (Genius Hours AND Advisory – you’ll get advisory lunches later this week – click here to see your Genius Hour assigned lunch).
o   We are allowing clubs/GH to choose for your members, you may use your whole assigned lunch time, or you may direct your members to get lunch and report to your assigned meeting place ASAP and eat lunch together while working. The only thing you may not choose to do is take both lunches or have some go one time and some another.  Be sure to communicate with your activity members what you want them to do for lunch.
o   We have secured a second microwave that has been placed outside on the verandah during lunch and there is one upstairs in the Depot by the water fountain for use if your activity meets there.
o   Notes:  remember Genius Hours are required attendance – you must participate in the one you signed up for.  We are looking into food trucks.  There are a lot of regulations around having them and we are not promising anything, but we are exploring as a possible option for the future.

·      Do you want to meet an Olympian? Are you interested in a fun and athletic club sport? Come to the STEM Rowing Team Interest meeting Thursday,  September 6th, 4:45 – 5:15 p.m. in the Commons to learn more about STEM’s newest sport and meet Dr. James Martinez, 6 time National Champion and World record holder in lightweight single sculls over 2000 meters! All students and parents are welcome. No experience required! Let us know you’re interested by filling out the interest form https://goo.gl/forms/BlEDnxgsT4aJ1Jke2. If you have any questions please email s856711@student.knoxschools.org

·        Reimaging starts TODAY!  You need to have backed up your computer (preferably to your Google Drive) or you will lose all documents!  Sophomores will go first.  We will come to your Government classes with Mr. Blythe to collect your computer over the next two days.  You should have it back by the end of the day.  This is not optional – all computers that were not given new to you this year must be reimaged annually – and no, you do not have a choice when to turn it in.  Today it worked out that most students got their computers back before the end of the period when they turned it in.
o   Juniors will be taken up on Thursday and Friday, Sept 6 & 7
o   Seniors will be taken up on Monday and Tuesday, Sept 10 & 11
Reminder directions on how to back up files are attached.

·        Spirit Week T-shirts are on Sale during LUNCH!  See a representative from the Prom Committee during any lunch to purchase.  Shirts are $15 for S-XL and $2 extra for XXL and over. Orders will be taken this week and next week! Don't delay! See below for shirt designs and colors.

·       Yearbooks for the 2018-19 school year are officially on sale! You can get yours for $55 ($50 for seniors if you pay at our office) until September 14th. After that, the price WILL go up, so make sure to order yours ASAP from jostensyearbooks.com! Also, follow @STEMYB on Twitter today to keep up with all yearbook news and updates!

Community  & Guidance Ops:

The Hearst Foundation also offers selected state finalists a $10,000 undergraduate scholarship. The student application and instructions for applying are available here.
