8-24-18 Student Mission Briefing

GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Friday, August 24, 2018 – N-day
School Mission – Boundless STEM: Learning & Leading
L&N Student Mission – #Own it!

School Ops:
·      Students – CreepyCon is being held today and this weekend in the Exhibition Hall next door.  Expect more traffic congestion than normal in the Worlds Fair Park.

·      Student drivers – make plans now – next week the whole week Blackstock lot will be loaded with Gold Wing motorcycles.  You need to plan to park at The International lot across the street from Blackstock.  Take advantage of this opportunity, because they will start selling those spaces in the next few weeks – try it out now for free!  We cannot guarantee free parking for more than 2 hours in the KMA lot.

·      The Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) at our school is looking for one student from each grade level to represent their peers at our monthly meetings. We're looking for reliable L&N STEM Academy students who want to be more involved in our school and who are willing to help support PTSA in decision making and upcoming events and this is a great leadership role for your high school resume.
Here's what you need to know:
o   PTSA meets the second Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Can you meet at this time on Tuesdays?
o   PTSA will need your help to put on PTSA events. Will you make yourself available to help?
o   PTSA will ask for your opinion on issues and events that impact your fellow students. Will you feel comfortable making your opinions known?
If you're interested and you answered yes to all of these questions, please click on this link to apply for the position for your grade.  You'll be notified by Friday, August 31st if you've been selected.

·      Hey Gryphons! Ultimate Frisbee has begun, however it is not too late to join the team! Practice is every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at World’s Fair Park from 5:00-6:30. Bring a white shirt, dark shirt, water, and running shoes. Email our coach Ted Parker at lparker4@vols.utk.edu if you have any questions.

·      Did you miss the Swim and Dive meeting?  Contact Dr. Bretscher.

·      Get ready for some delicious ice cream during early release on Monday, August 27th. Kilwins generously donated ice cream to be sold for only $3 (cash only). This is the Sophomore Class Fundraiser for the year. Grab a tasty cold treat and help the Sophomore Class raise money for exciting events throughout the year. You can find us in the Commons and on the Verandah after 4th block!

·      If you did not attend the SGA interest meeting to receive your application, pick one up in the office. There is a separate application for freshmen next to the general application. If you are a returning member you still need to apply. Applications are due Friday, 24th by 4:30.

·      This year, we will be starting our school's first HOSA chapter. HOSA is an international student organization for those interested in healthcare. The mission of the club is to promote healthcare career opportunities and to improve the quality of healthcare delivered. For students who choose to get involved, it helps them improve upon leadership skills, properly pursue a medical career, get involved in local healthcare projects, and earn scholarships and internships.  As our chapter is just beginning this year, we ask those who are interested to join to help us make the most out of our club and to go with us to the HOSA state conference in the spring.  Be sure to mark HOSA for Wednesdays when Genius Hour sign-ups are released this week!
