GRYPHON MISSION BRIEFING
For Thursday, April 7, 2016 – “L” classes
2015-16 L&N Student Mission – Own it!
School Ops:
·      Good luck to the track team competing at West today!

·      Make plans to join us this Saturday, 5:30 – 8:00 pm, for our PTSA BBQ dinner and silent auction!  Cool items in the auction, like a parking pass for next year, Gryphon swag basket, Disney parkhopper passes, local restaurant gift cards, and more!  Go here to order your dinner tickets.

·      TODAY!  We have Heather Bhakta, DVM, for the guest speaker in the College and Career series. Dr. Bhakta has been a large and small animal veterinarian for over 15 years. She will discuss her career as a vet, and the academic path she chose. Dr. Bhakta's presentation will be on Thursday, April 7, 12:30 - 1:10 (during Genius Hour) in Room 202. Email Jamie.nelson@knoxschools.org with questions.

·      One of our video students, Alli Lapps, has had her work accepted into a national competition.  Please visit this link http://theaudienceawards.com/films/colorado-revealed-71995  to view and vote for her video.  You will have to create a free account on the site to verify you are a human and not a robot!

·      If you’re missing seeing someone in the cafeteria, it’s because our own Ms. Jamie received a surprise promotion!  Ms. Houser has left us to become manager of the cafeteria at Bonny Kate Elem.  We’re happy for her, but sad for us.  Jamie was special and knew so many of you so well.  As we have subs through the end of the year at the registers, please be patient because they will not know your meal account number like Jamie did so they will have to look it up.  Congratulations to her and thank you for your patience with the subs!

·      Good luck to the TSA team who are competing the rest of the week at the State TSA Competition!  Hope everyone makes it to Nationals!

·      All students – here’s your chance to help out STEM 3 class groups in their latest project.  Please take a moment and participate in this survey to give them your thoughts:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6FWN3CX

·      Please remember that SGA's book drive is this week and next week. We're collecting books of all types to be donated for use by children as well as adults. Help our local communities by donating your gently used books. Bring your books to the Media Center and leave them in front of the fireplace. (If the Media Center is closed, please drop the books off in the office, and SGA will collect them later.) Thank you for supporting literacy in our community!

Community  & Guidance Ops:
·      The Brian M. Conley Young Writers' Institute is a free day of creative writing classes for high school students and their teachers. Held on the campus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and administered by Margaret Lazarus Dean of UT’s English Department, the Institute offers classes in creative writing, this year in fiction and poetry. All classes are taught by experts in their field. Lunch is provided.
The day begins on Saturday, April 9, at the University of Tennessee campus in HSS 71 at 10:15 a.m., when registration opens. Students will take one class in the morning and another in the afternoon. After the second class, everyone returns to room HSS 71 for an open-mic reading, where the students can read from the work they wrote that day, if they’d like to. Our Open Mic usually runs until 3 p.m., at which point the day ends. Students will learn new writing skills, gain confidence in expressing their ideas, and get a taste for academic life at the University of Tennessee.

Quote of the day from Albert Einstein:

You have to learn the rules of the game.  And then you have to play better than anyone else.

Practice L&N Habits every day: Collaboration, Critical thinking, Design, Innovation, Inquiry, & Professionalism
